Biographie
Chiara Letizia est anthropologue et historienne des religions. Elle est professeure en traditions religieuses de l’Asie du Sud à l’université du Québec à Montréal (depuis 2013) et chercheuse en anthropologie culturelle à l’université de Milan-Bicocca (depuis 2006) ; elle est aussi chercheuse associée à la School of Anthropology & Museum Ethnography de l’Université d’Oxford et membre associée du laboratoire Centre d’Etudes Himalayennes du CNRS (France).
Chiara s’est formée en Italie (Université de Rome-La Sapienza), en France (Université Paris Nanterre et Centre d'Études Himalayennes, CNRS) et au Royame-Uni (Institut d'Anthropologie Sociale et Culturelle de l’Université d’Oxford).
Elle mène des recherches de terrain au Népal depuis 1997. Au fils des années, elle s’est intéressée à la relation entre les déesses vivantes et la royauté, aux rites d’initiation bouddhistes newar, aux pèlerinages hindous, à l’adoption du bouddhisme dans le cadre des mouvements ethniques, aux multiples significations de la laïcité et finalement au rôle des procédures judiciaires dans le processus de redéfinition du rapport entre la religion et l’État.
Ses recherches en cours sont consacrées à l’étude des discours et de l’activisme juridique contre le sacrifice sanglant au Népal et à l’étude des lieux de pèlerinage partagés par les bouddhistes et les hindous.
Cheminement académique
2009-2011 Postdoctorat à titre de « Newton Fellow » à l'Institut d'Anthropologie Sociale et Culturelle (ISCA) de l'université d'Oxford.
2004 Postdoctorat au sein de l'équipe de recherche du CNRS « Centre d'Études Himalayennes » à Villejuif.
2003 Doctorat en Histoire des Religions au département des Études historico-religieuses de l'université de Rome - La Sapienza.
